In this artwork, Florida realist painter Kevin Grass pays homage to Northern Renaissance master Jan Van Eyck's Arnolfini Wedding Portrait, currently housed in the National Gallery of Art in London. Here, the gay couple is celebrating their wedding, since marriage equality has just been legalized in the United States. Just as with the earlier Flemish masterpiece, Kevin has included several symbols to allude to the location and to ideals of fidelity in this marriage portrait. Please see the symbolism sheet on the "originals" page by clicking on the details below the main image to get the full explanation of all of the iconography in this work which took more than 400 hours to paint!
Just a note on the "category" of this work: there was no good category on this website for Love Wins! Kevin decided to put this piece into the "humorous category" because that is a positive thing, rather than the "dark category," for example. That does not mean that he finds the topic of marriage equality funny. To the contrary! He is delighted that the United States is one step closer to awarding true equal rights to all of its inhabitants. He just wanted to clarify this, so that there would be no misunderstandings.
