Young adults today choose to live with their parents longer than in previous generations because they are not ready to take on the responsibilities of adulthood. Middle-aged parents sometimes find that emotional and financial support for these children exacerbates the problem rather than paving the way to a solution.

Mother and Child

Young adults today choose to live with their parents longer than in previous generations because they are not ready to take on the responsibilities of adulthood. Florida artist Kevin Grass explores such a relationship between a middle-aged mother and her young adult son in this realistic painting.

see full description & specifications

Florida realism artist Kevin Grass often explores social issues in his figurative paintings. In this work, he is commenting upon the trend in American families where young adult children are dependent longer on their parents than in earlier generations. The middle-aged parents sometimes find that emotional and financial support for these children exacerbates the problem rather than paving the way to a solution.

The athletic model for the mother symbolizes her inner strength, but she appears trapped as she is enclosed in the circle created by her family pets and her adult son. The young man in his early twenties clings to his mother in a way that suggests that he would collapse without her support. His watch is blank because he is not ready to face the responsibilities of adulthood.

The mother reluctantly puts her hand on her son's back, but while she wants to offer support, she is concerned that she is enabling his co-dependency. She faces her pets because she is afraid to face this reality.

The hands of the wall clock mirror the poses of the two central figures. As the minute hand drives the hour hand, so the actions, or inactions, of the son control the life of the mother.
