Schooner Racing the Storm commemorates my first trip on a sailing ship! It emulates historical seascapes by showing the Tall Ship Lynx in full sail as it outraces a storm in the background.
Growing up in the Midwest, I was a complete landlubber. I did not learn to swim until my wife taught me how when I was already an adult. I reached mid-life before I had the opportunity to venture out on a sailing ship. To make the occasion memorable, I got to go on a sunset cruise of the Tall Ship Lynx, which is a replica of a ship from America's War of 1812.
The experience of cutting through the gorgeous ocean waters while under full sail left such an impression, that I created this painting.
The work started out being painted in acrylic, but because of a mis-labeled tube of white paint, I ended up doing the final layers of glazes on this piece in oil paint. The sails have roughly ten different layers of paint to capture their fullness filled with wind.
