Schooner Racing the Storm shows the Tall Ship Lynx in full sail on the open waters. This windjammer-type of vessel is a replica of the kinds of ships used in America's War of 1812. This seascape reminds viewers of a time that seemed simpler, where outracing the storms of life was quite possible.

The Lynx is the first sailing ship I have ever had the privilege of sailing on: the experience was so great, that I had to capture it in a painting. While our sunset cruise on this remarkable schooner was marked by beautiful weather, I wanted to add some of the drama felt by racing the wind and included a storm in the backdrop.

This painting, which was started with acrylic paint and was completed with many layers of glazes of oil paint, reminds of the historical past of the United States. It would be a remarkable addition to any traditional decor!

Schooner Racing the Storm

Schooner Racing the Storm commemorates my first trip on a sailing ship! It emulates historical seascapes by showing the Tall Ship Lynx in full sail as it outraces a storm in the background.

Growing up in the Midwest, I was a complete landlubber. I did not learn to swim until my wife taught me how when I was already an adult. I reached mid-life before I had the opportunity to venture out on a sailing ship. To make the occasion memorable, I got to go on a sunset cruise of the Tall Ship Lynx, which is a replica of a ship from America's War of 1812.

The experience of cutting through the gorgeous ocean waters while under full sail left such an impression, that I created this painting.

The work started out being painted in acrylic, but because of a mis-labeled tube of white paint, I ended up doing the final layers of glazes on this piece in oil paint. The sails have roughly ten different layers of paint to capture their fullness filled with wind.
