In the View of the Santa Maria della Salute, Venice, Florida artist Kevin Grass pays homage to the vedute paintings of Italian artist Canaletto. Fashionable Europeans collected these cityscapes as mementoes of their trips to Venice. When Kevin visited Venice, he was not only enchanted by the beauty of the palazzos and the Baroque churches, but also by the artwork of this great master, so on his return home he did an updated version of one of these scenes. The main difference between the 18th century version and the modern one is that Kevin used acrylic instead of oil paint, so that the painting would not crack over time. Also, he incorporated the current vaporetto (water taxi) stop and a motor boat in the back. The gondolas and the architecture have remained the same since Canaletto's time.
